this archipelago is situated in the
wild blue Atlantic Ocean 45

Scotland.

OUTER HEBRIDES

islands and hundreds of
uninhabited isles and
skerries

Lewis is the largest of the
Outer Hebrides and on the
East side of the island is
located the only real town
of the archipelago,
Stornoway.

Although part of the same
landmass, Harris is
considered another island
and it has a character all of
its own.

HISTORY
The islands of Lewis and
Harris have a long history,
evinced in the ancient
monuments.

The most famous site of
the archipelago are the
mysterious Standing
Stones of Callanish.
,
,
Five thousand years ago the
Calanais Stones was
perhaps a center of ritual
power. People erected great
standing stones there and
at sites nearby.

Why and how they did this
remains a mistery hidden
behind the mask of time.
,
One of the most
characteristic element of
the Outer Hebrides is the
lighthouse.

There are different all
around islands,  and most
of them  are designed by
Robert Stevenson.

For over one hundred and
fifty years Robert
Stevenson and his
descendants designed most
of Scotland’s lighthouses.
